At twenty-nine, fun-loving, good-natured Claire has everything she ever wanted: a husband she adores, a great apartment, a good job. Then, on the day she gives birth to her first baby, James visits her in the recovery room to inform her that he's leaving her. Claire is left with a beautiful newborn daughter, a broken heart, and a body that she can hardly bear to look at in the mirror. So, in the absence of any better offers, Claire decides to go home to her family in Dublin. To her gorgeous man-eating sister Helen, her soap-watching mother, her bewildered father. And there, sheltered by the love of an (albeit quirky) family, she gets better. A lot better. In fact, so much better that when James slithers back into her life, he's in for a bit of a surprise.
If you're a lover of Chick-Lit then you will love this book. The debut book from author 'Marian Keyes' is now a firm favourite of mine. I was looking under my mums bed when I spotted this and on reading the back I just had to read it.
In this book we meet Claire, after she has just given birth to her baby daughter, she is distraught as it is also the same day her husband leaves her for another woman. I was rooting for Claire throughout this book as I fell in love with her character, she is an ordinary woman who has some serious bad luck.
Travelling back to Dublin to be with her family, she becomes a complete recluse and refuses to get out of bed most days, not getting dressed and being forced to have a bath, her parents taking on the main care of her daughter.
Then she perks herself up and cooks dinner for her family (something which is never done) and meets her sister's friend, Adam. Claire finds herself spending more time with Adam, who seems to enjoy hers and her daughters company, and finds a new lease of life she desperately needs after her husbands betrayal.
Following a meal with Adam (and some much needed sex), Claire returns home to be told her husband James has flown in to see her. Now she must make a decision...
I don't want to give too much away about the plot but I will tell you at the point James comes back I had to stop reading for a day or two as I got so angry at his character. This shows what a great writer Marian Keyes is, to make me feel such hatred for a character just through her words.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good romance novel.
